I N T E R P A G E (TM) Network Services Inc. ============================================================================ Service Update, Tues, November 7, 1995 [] Enhanced Fax Options Now Available ------------------------------------- Hello! [] A number of our OutFax(sm) E-Mail Fax Distribution and InFax(sm) Automatic E-Mail -> Fax conversion customers have made a series of suggestions on how our fax service could be improved. We are pleased to announce that as a result of these suggestions we have made a number of additions to the options which users may customize to suit their individual faxing needs. All configuration options are available by telnetting to "interpage.net", entering your userid, and then your password. (These new features are not currently available via the WWW fax configuration page, but will be shortly). After you have logged on, select Option 5 - "View/Edit Faxing Style". If you do have have access to telnet, please let us know, and we will be glad to make these changes for you. -------------------- The new options are: * User Configurable Header Messages: You may now set the fax "header" message to indicate whatever text message you wish, which will appear at the top of every fax page, other than the cover. Typically, the fax "header" would be a name and return fax or voice number. To set this option, after entering Option "5" from the main menu, select T. Header on text faxes : default After entering "t", you will be presented with 3 options: -None: don't use ANY headers at all -Default: display "From:" and your registered username, page #, and date -User-defined: Display customized information on the left, with page and date information on the right. If you select to create your own header, you will note that a new entry in created in your fax options menu, specifically: U. Header contents : You may then select "u", and enter the desired header message. * Max retries on "no carrier": Sometimes, the when Interpage sends faxes out to fax destinations, for a number of reasons, the fax machine does not respond. In some cases, the destination fax may simply be disconnected, or there may be some temporary difficulty in connecting via the local telephone company. In others, however, you may be calling (and potentially bothering!) a person, not a fax machine. As you are charged for such calls, and in order to avoid repeated re-dials to someone who may not appreciate a series of fax calls, we created an option which allows OutFax and InFax customers to set a DIFFERENT retry number in the event that we receive a "no carrier" (no fax answered) rather than a "busy" (which would tend to indicate that a fax IS present, but that it is in-use). Thus, for example, you may wish to set your "Maximum number of retries" (Option "M") to 6 or so, but your "Max retries on no carrier" (Option "S") to 0 or 1. With these settings, busy fax destinations will be retried up to 6 times, while destinations where no fax answers will not receive any retries (if you enter 0) or one retry (if you select 1). To change your "no carrier" retry setting, look for : S. Max retries on no carrier : ...select "S", and enter the number of "no carrier" retrys. It is by default set at your "M" (busy retry) setting. You may "re-default" to your option "M" settings at will, if desired. Note that you may also set the delay interval beween retries, buy selecting: N. Delay between retries : xxx seconds We normally suggest 3 minutes, thus 180 seconds. You may set this other time intervals, but we suggest that you allow AT LEAST 2 minutes (120 seconds) between retry attempts. * Left Margin Indentation: A number of customers, mainly those outside of the US and Canada, have noticed that in some cases, their faxes were set so far to the left that the leftmost characters or digits were "cut off". In order to correct for this, we created a setting which allows any user to "shift" the text over to the right by creating a user-defined left margin. To configure the amount of space in your left margin, select: P. Left margin indent : xx points ...where xx is any numeric value between "0" (no margin) and "72" (1 inch margin). By default, users do not have margins, so if you notice that the leftmost characters are truncated, try adding some margin spacing, which should cure the problem. Note that cover sheets are not controlled by this setting - if a cover sheet which you have registered with us becomes subject to the left truncation problem, please let us know and we will reconfigure your customized cover sheet. * Paper Size: (NOT CURRENTLY OPERATIVE) Page size, when completed, will allow users to select between standard US "letter" sized paper, or the slightly narrower and longer "A4" metric format. Currently, A4 faxing is not operative, however, as soon as it is available, we will issue a bulliten. (We suggest that you do NOT use this feature until we correct the remaining difficulties). We encourage OutFax and InFax customers to try these new features and see if they help to improve the utility and value of our faxing services. Many other Interpage customers on the "Basic" and other plans may also utilize our fax services, and we encourage you as well to try out these features. As always, we welcome your questions and comments about these new fax features as well those regarding any aspect of our growing host of services. Thank you for your continued use of Interpage!
