I N T E R P A G E (TM) Use Instructions // Updated: 5/14/96 _____________________________________________________________________ I. Overview *********** Welcome to Interpage! Here is a brief overview of the services which we offer. We are constantly adding new features and improving older ones, so please read our bullitens (or ask for one if you don't receive them). We basically offer an E-Mail and WWW to Pager Gateway service, which is available to all pager owners, both Alpha and Numeric. Additionally, we dispatch e-mail to Fax machines to anywhere in the world, as well as allow page dispatches to other pager users (who do not need to be registered on Interpage). (We also offer paging service, however, this manual does not cover the use of paging equipment. Please consult our Web site at http://www.interpage.net, or send e-mail to "questions@interpage.net" for more information on how to use Interpage-provided pagers and paging equipment.) Users can configure their settings, add or delete pager entries, change fax numbers, etc., either by sending e-mail to Interpage's automatic mail server, or by telnetting onto our system directly. Every Interpage user has a "schedule", or set of times and/or conditions which tell the system when a given user will be paged, faxed, or have mail forwarded. By manipulating this schedule, users may alter their settings and thus modify how and when they are paged/faxed/emailed at will. Some of our features include: 1. E-Mail notification of inbound mail to any number of Alpha and/or Numeric pagers. 2. You may forward your mail to us, have people send mail to use for forwarding to you, or both. 3. User-controlled paging options, such as inclusion or exclusion of all message fields (From:, Subject:, Reply-To:, Time:, Date:, etc...) length of e-mail messages, maximum number of pages per e-mail, time zone settings, personal information, passwords and more. 4. Page screening - Control WHO pages you by allowing only certain users' e-mail to alert your pager, or deny paging to only specific users. You may also restrict by time of day, by a secret "codeword" in the Subject: line, or by any combination of the above. You may have many pagers configured, each with different screens. 5. Mail-Forwarding - You can have mail forwarded to wherever you are! Users can control where they want mail forwarded to, including multiple locations. 6. Direct Paging of Telephone Numbers - People can use E-Mail to directly send you a "telephone number" page to your numeric or alpha pager. 7. Page Holding - You may override your paging schedule by sending a quick note to Interpage's mail server which will suspend/reinstate paging for a given period of time, or if no time is specified, until midnight. This is useful if you travel around from terminal to terminal a lot, and want to be able to turn paging "on" and "off" without resetting your schedule. 8. Faxing - similar to paging, except that e-mail is *faxed* to you based on your "schedule". Faxing can be used in cojunction with paging and e-mail forwarding is desired. 9. Fax-On-Demand - You may store documents on Interpage which will be faxed to a recipient upon an email request, or in the future, as a result of a telephone call placed to our automated fax server. ___________________________________________________________________________ II. How to set up your Interpage Account: ***************************************** You will be able to receive pages/faxes/forwarded mail when people send mail to: @interpage.net You can also forward your mail to your interpage.net address, and it will be paged/faxed out for you. To have mail from *some* Unix systems (like Netcom, for example) forward to us, create a file called ".forward" (no quotes), and the file should contain a single line which looks like this: \, @interpage.net So, a file for a Netcom (or whatever) user "joe" with an Interpage name of "joe-smith" would have a .forward file that looks like this: \joe, joe-smith@interpage.net ...and that's all there is to it. If you can't get this to work, or you are on a system where this WON'T work, ask your system administrator how this can be done. (Remember, even if you can't forward your mail to us, users can still send mail to your Interpage address, and it will be forwarded to you and paged/faxed at the same time.) If you have people sending mail to you (and you forward to Interpage) and also have people sending mail to Interpage (and it then gets forwarded to you), don't worry - it won't loop......we hope! :) You may get two copies of each letter though, but that's about ALL you should get. (If you get more, let us know!) In order to set up your account fully, or if you want to make any changes or additions, you will need to Telnet onto our system and update your user account. (If you do not have Telnet access, you may still configure/modify your account via E-Mail. See notes below for details.) PLEASE make sure that you Telnet/E-Mail onto our system to initially set up your account and change your password. (See instructions below on how this is done.) By default, we set your mail forwarding and paging specifications per any instructions you gave to us when you signed up. If these settings are still OK with you, then you really don't need to do much other than change you PW, although we suggest you familiarize yourself with the variety of options and features available to you as an Interpage user. Once you have set mail forwarding on your Interpage account, and/or on your home account where you will receive all your mail, you're more or less done! When people send mail to you at Interpage, you will be paged and/or mail will be forwarded as per your configuration file which you set up when you Telnetted on or sent Configuration E-Mail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. How to Utilize Interpage's Configuration and On-Line tools: **************************************************************** Interpage offers a number of "Configuration Options" and "On-Line Tools" which are available to most users. Configuration options include things like "Scheduling", where users can set how, from whom, and to where they are paged, setting your personal preferences, etc. On-Line tools (admittedly a bit of a misnomer since these may be accessed via e-mail as well) include features such as "outward paging" (sending pages to other Interpage or non-Interpage users), "outward faxing" (sending faxes), a Reminder Schedule to set reminder pages or e-mail at any given time in the future, etc. In order to access these services, you may log on to Interpage via telnet (a program almost universally available on most systems), or send e-mail to our automated mail server. Most Configuration Options can currently be modified by telnet only, while most On-Line Tools are accessible via telnet and/or e-mail. *In order to log in and access the system via Telnet: ----------------------------------------------------- Run Telnet (ie, type "telnet"), and our system name is "interpage.net". You would thus type: --> telnet interpage.net (When you type "telnet" on many systems, it needs to be in lower case.) When you connect, enter you user name, and then your password (the first time it is the temporary password we assign to you - please change it to a new password right away). You'll see a menu, and you are free to experiment and make whatever changes you wish. Just please be sure to change your password (under the "Personal Preferences" section. When you are done, and you want your modifications to be saved by our system, type "S" before leaving to save them with us. You MUST tpye "S" before leaving to save any changes, including your new password. The Menu (currently) will appear as follows: ---------------------------------- Interpage Network Services Group Account amyname of Joe S. Anyname 1. View account information 2. View billing information 3. View pager information 4. View/edit paging style 5. View/edit paging/forwarding/faxing schedule 6. View/edit reminder schedule 7. Change preferences 8. Retrieve information files 9. Send pages S. Save changes and exit X. Exit without saving changes Option: ************************************************* Here is a brief summary of each of the above option screens: (Please note that although the names will remain the same, the numbers which correspond to the options may change as more features are added.) 1. VIEW ACCOUNT INFORMATION: Allows a user to see the full personal name which we have on file, address, phone number, fax number, paging number, and e-mail address (if any). It will also list an alternate e-mail address besides your primary address where we will accept Configuration Option/Online Tools commands via e-mail. Finally, it will let you know how many pagers we have configured for your account. You can not make changes to these options from this screen, although you can change the "alternate e-mail" address from "Change Preferences" Menu. The Account Information Screen appears as follows: Account information for anyname Mr. Joe Anyname 20 Hilltop Road 22 Hiltop Road Hingham, MA 02186 Day phone : 617-555-8643 Email: anyname@milton.com Night phone: 617-696-8080 Pager phone: 617-555-9901 Fax phone : 401-698-8643 Alternate email: anyname@swampscott.com Number of configured pagers: 3 ****************************************************************** 2. VIEW BILLING INFORMATION: Allows a user to see their current billing status and most recent invoices. Users may use this menu option to examine their rate plan (Basic, Value, Lite, etc.), Fax plan if any, and payment method (Visa, MC, Amex, or check). The due date for the most current bill, as well as past invoices and their totals, are also available. This menu option does not allow any changes, instead, it is intended to allow users to keep up-to-date with their billing status and rate plan(s). The Billing Information Screen appears as: Billing record for account anyname Bill by: Visa Billing plan: Basic Fax plan : Basic faxing Account is paid up until : Sat Dec 31 23:59:59 1994 Account will be suspended on : Fri Jan 1 23:59:59 1999 Invoices on file: 2 Date Number Amount Date paid Amt paid 12/26/94 10002 $10.99 NOT PAID $0.00 12/19/94 10001 $12.51 NOT PAID $0.00 ******************************************************************* 3. VIEW PAGER INFORMATION: This screen displays all the information which we at Interpage have recorded in order to page you at your selected pager(s) successfully. Two "types" of pagers are displayed here, "Inward Pagers", or pagers which will go off when e-mail is received, as well as "Outward Pagers" (Outpagers for short) which you may use to page other people or groups of people. The first set of entries are regular, or Inward Pagers. These show the currently accepted pagers at which our system will allow you to be paged. These pagers will show up whenever you set a "Schedule" Entry (ie, set up a pager to be paged in the "Schedule" section) as a list of pagers which you may choose from. The second set of entries, if any, are Outpagers, for FOP (Fixed Outward Paging) telnet or e-mail paging to OTHER pagers. Generally, these are only Alpha pagers, since we need to test out and configure our system to Alpha pagers, and thus we can't allow users to enter Alpha pagers themselves via VOP (Variable Outward Paging), which is available for most numeric pagers. An example of a typical Pager Information screen is as follows: Pager information for anyname 3 pagers, 1 outpagers configured. Name System Number Alternate Pager ID Max A1 A2 alpha1 Mobilemedia 8003287587 none 555121 228 16 20 numer1 Generic numeric 8005551212 none none 20 1 0 numer2 Generic numeric 4165551212 none none 20 1 12 Out pagers: alpha2 Mobilemedia 8003287587 none 00001 228 16 20 [Note the Alpha pagers show, IXO/TAP (modem) Access Number, an Alternate access number, if any, the Pager ID assigned to your pager by your paging company, and the maximum number of characters which your service will allow in a single page. (A1 and A2 are reserved for Interpage to properly send paging information in a readable way to your pager.) Numeric pagers generally show the pager number or access number, a pager ID if an access number is used, and a maximum number of 20 characters per page. If you think any of these settings are incorrect and need to be altered, please send mail to "help@interpage.net".] ************************************************************************** 4. VIEW/EDIT PAGING STYLE: This screen allows you to both view and alter your paging settings. For example, if you wish to allow only 100 characters to be displayed on your alpha pager, you may set that here. A typical screen is as follows: ---------------------- Paging style for account anyuser Alphanumeric paging Numeric paging A. Time in 24 notation: OFF 1. Date mail sent : ON B. Time mail sent : OFF 2. Time mail sent : ON C. Date mail sent : OFF 3. Name of sender : ON D. Time mail received : OFF (NI) 4. Name of unknown: ON E. Date mail received : OFF (NI) 5. Include Field Names: "On" = will show field names (ie, From:, To:, etc.) "Off"= will not precede information with field names O. Max. Pages to Send: The "hard limit" number of pages Interpage sends sends to your pager as a result of email. P. Lenght of Text: Sets the number of characters OTHER THAN the header information, that is, fromt he body of the message, which will be paged. *The current Numeric Options are: --------------------------------- 1. Date Mail Sent: "On" = will display the date email was send, eg, 0201 will mean February 1st. 2. Time Mail was sent: "On" = will result in being paged with the time mail that mail was send, eg, 0945 is 9:45AM 3. Name of Sender: "On" = Interpage will try to match the sender's name against a database of senders which you have previously entered (see below). If a match can't be found, it will "spell" out the name as per item 4, immediately below. 4. Name of Uknown: "On" = Interpage will send to your pager a 2-digit code which corresponds to a Touch Tone pad's keys to "spell" out an email sender's first name. Thus, if mail arrived from "Doug", Interpage will send 31 (Button 3, 1st. letter = 3, thus D), 63 (Button 6, 3rd letter, thus O), 82 (Button 8, 2nd letter, thus U), and 41 (Button 4, 1st letter, thus G). Thus, with "Name of Sender" enabled, you would receive 31638241 if mail was received from "Doug". 5. Size in Characters: (Not yet available) 6. Size in Words: (Not yet available) 7. Size in Lines: (Not yet available) 8. Separate Fields: This option will allow you to configure how the information which Interpage sends to you will appear on your pager. Many pagers support a "*" as a space or a dash (-). Some require two "*"s. Some, like Skytel, don't allow anything. Option 8 will allow you to select whatever characters (if any) that your system requires to create a separator between the various numeric paging fields. SkyTel users may wish to select a code such as "99" or some numeric code to appear between fields. 9. Max. Pages to Send: Allows you to set a "hard limit" on the number of Numeric pages which Interpage will page you with as a result of a single piece of email. 0. Unknown Length: Setting for the number of two-digit codes which are used to "spell" out the sender's name. A limit of "5" will generate 10 digits, 3 will generate 6 digits, etc. -. Remove sender entry: Used to remove a given sender from the Numeric Database. +. Add sender entry: Used to add a new entry into the sender database. You will be prompted to enter a sender's name, and then to assign the sender a 3-digit code which will be familiar to you and instantly alert you as to the identity of the sender. From then on, email from that given sender will be paged to you as the specially desginated code, rather than have Interpage "spell" the name with two-digit codes. V. View senders: Numeric pager users may designate special senders which will trigger a 3-digit numeric code rather than "spell" out then name with 2-digit Touch Tone based codes. This option will allow you to view all the senders you have in your sender database, and see which codes are assigned to them. *************************************************************************** 5. VIEW EDIT PAGING/FORWARDING/FAXING SCHEDULE: This is the screen where you actually set when, how, and from whom you will receive pages, faxes, or have your mail forwarded. By DEFAULT, when you are first set up for service on our system, you will have paging active to your pager (or faxing active to your fax, if you are a fax account), as well as mail forwarding to your email account on your home system (if any) all day long. You may change this, as well as add screens to block pages/faxes/forwarding from certain users, or add new schedules, from this option screen. Setting your schedule will be discussed in detail in Section IV, titled, "How do I get paged and Faxed?", below. The Schedule Screen appears as follows: ---------------------------------------------------- Paging/forwarding/faxing schedule for account anyname Pages will be held until Fri Feb 3 23:59:59 1995 #. VIEW/EDIT REMINDER SCHEDULE: The option screen allows you set daily, weekly, or weekdaily reminfer which will be paged to your alpha or numeric pager. You may also select to have email generated as a reminder as well. The Reminder screen appears as follows: Reminder schedule for account anyname Date Time Freq. Pager E Message A. 12/13/95 19:21 Once alpha1 N testing B. 02/03/95 20:34 Daily alpha1 N Test of Daily Reminder, 8:34P C. 12/14/95 12:34 Once alpha1 N fsdgf Menu: +. Add reminder Q. Quit and save -. Delete reminder To add a reminder, enter "+". The system will then prompt you to enter the date of the reminder, in MM/DD/YY format. After you enter the date of the reminder, or if a series of regular reminders the FIRST date that it will occur on, the system will prompt you to enter the time of the reminder, in 24-hour notation. (When entering a reminder, please be sure to allow time for it to be paged and for your paging system to process it and send it to your pager.) After you enter the time and date of the reminder, the system will you how often you want to be reminded with your new entery: Once, Daily, Weekly, or Weekdays. You will then be asked to select what pager you wish to be notified on, and to enter either an alpha or numeric message which will be paged to you as a reminder. You may also select to have the reminder sent as email. **************************************************************************** 7. CHANGE PREFERENCES: This menu option screen allows you to set some personal preferences for your account. A typical screen appears as follows: User preferences for account anyname 1. Change password 2. Change time zone, currently defaulting to US/Eastern 3. Change alternate accepted email, currently anyname@alternate.site 4. Change outpage confirmations, currently success and failure. Q. Return to main menu. Choice: 1 - Allows you to chage the password which you use when you use Telnet to log onto Interpage. Please change this as soon as you receive confirmation that your account on Interpage is active. 2 - Allows you to set the time zone that you are located in, so that you may enter schedule and reminder entries in your local time. 3 - By changing your alternate accepted email, you may add another site(s) other than the one you initially listed with us which will be "allowed" to access these configuration menus and user settings via email. If you only log on from one system, you will not need to use this option. However, if you log on, for example, from one system at work and another at home, and you gave us your work's email address when you signed up, you will need to add your the account which you log on from when you are at home in order to send e-mail commands to Interpage from that accounyt. Valid account names are: "joe@cat.dog" - Interpage will accept alternate mail from "joe@cat.dog" ".cat.dog" - Interpage will accept alternate mail from anyone at "cat.dog: "joe@.dog" - Interpage will accept alternate mail from Joe at any site on domain ".dog". 4. Allows a user to alter Outpage notifications, for both successful pages and failed ones. Users may opt to have notification for both success and failed Outpages, successful oitpages, failed outpages, or neither. **************************************************************************** 8. RETRIEVE INFORMATION FILES: Users may browse through on-line information about Interpage, and read help files on how to use the system (including this manual). Users also have the option of having these files mailed to them directly for viewing on their own readers rather than over the telnet interface. ***************************************************************************** 9. SEND PAGES: Users may telnet onto Interpage and send pages to pre-configured Alpha pagers or to almost any numeric pager. When you select option 9, you will see: >Send F)ixed outbound or V)ariable outbound page? F If you select "F", the following menu will appear: >Available pagers: >1. alpha1 >2. numer1 >3. numer2 >A. alpha2 >Choice: You will then be able to issue a page to any of these "fixed" pagers. Fixed pagers are those which have been configured for your use (Inward Pagers), and alpha pagers which were specifically configured for Outward Paging. Inward pages are desginated by numbers, Outward pagers are designated by letters. You may also wish to send a page to any numeric pager, and you may do so by entering "V", for Varialbe Outward Paging: >Send F)ixed outbound or V)ariable outbound page? V The system will then ask you to enter your numeric pager type, most pager users with a direct-dialed pager will use "1", SkyTel users may use either 2 or 3, depending on which SkyTel service they subscribe to. (SkyPAGE users generally will select 2, SkyTel users who have the 800-SKY-8888 access number will generally use 3.) >Numeric pager type: >1. num >2. num-a >3. num-b >Choice: 1 The system will then prompt you for the phone number of the pager you wish to page: >Phone number: After which you may enter the digits you wish paged, and Interpage will send them out to the specified pager. *********************************************************************** *In order to configure via E-Mail and set options: -------------------------------------------------- If you don't have access to Telnet, you may still configure and alter your profile on our system at will, but you will need to do so by sending us messages by mail which our system can understand. Since this method sends commands directly to our system, you need to follow the instructions VERY carefully - an omitted word or a character in the wrong place may confuse our system and cause it to reject your request. Currently, you may use our mail configuration server to: -Set your reminder schedule -Request a copy of all your user settings and billing info -Enable Page Holding -Send Pages -Send Faxes To communicate with the E-Mail configuration server on our system, you will need to address all mail to: YOURACCOUNT-config@interpage.net So if your account is "jon" you would mail jon-config@interpage.net. The mail must be sent from your configured email address; email from all other addresses will be ignored and you will receive an error message. This is to maintain the security on your account. You may add an alternate site which our system will recognize mail from and respond accordingly (ie, not reject it) by telneting to the User Configuration menu, selecting "User Preferences", and adding your alternate account where indicated. If you can not telnet on, send us some mail at "help@interpage.net", and we will make the changes for you. When using the E-Mail Configuration Server, the subject is generally ignored, except for certain keywords pertaining to faxing. The important part to watch out for is the body. Thus, for example, a typical e-mail message to add a Reminder Schedule would have in it's body: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- +Remind 01/01/95 0001 once alpha "Happy new year!" show done ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This would schedule a new reminder at a minute past midnight on January one (on your currently configured timezone) for your alpha pager to wish yourself a happy new year. It would then show a complete account profile. A confirmation message will be sent directly to your configured email address; any errors encountered will be displayed there. All commands (EXCEPT Fax commands), should be in the body of the message. Please note that quotes (") are very important. Most arguments ARE case sensitive, so if one of your pagers is called "alpha" then using "ALPHA" or "Alpha" will not work. The commands themselves, however, are NOT case sensitive, so "done", "Done", "DONE" and "DoNe" are equivalent. Key: Arguments in <> (e.g., ) are required Arguments in {} (e.g., {PagerID}) are required in certain circumstances The commands are: DONE Tells the mail account editor that you are done. This is not strictly necessary, but if your mailer inserts a signature file this will avoid getting an error message when the editor cannot understand your signature file. SHOW Prints a complete profile of your account HOLD { ON | OFF | } Enables or disables the page hold feature. When the page hold feature is enabled, all regular "Page" schedule options will be disabled. Reminders and direct pages WILL still work, however. This feature may be useful, for example, when you log in, you would send a "hold on" message, because you'll know when you get email. Then when you log out, you can do a "hold off" message. ON Enables the page hold feature until midnight of the current day. OFF Disables any page holding currently in effect. Enables the page hold feature for the next HH hours and MM minutes. OUTPAGE "" Sends a message to a configured out pager. It can also send pages to your regular pagers; just use that pager name. Be sure to include the quotes around the message! A name of a configured out pager or pager "" The message to be sent. This MUST be enclosed in quotes and no quotes may be used in the message. OUTNUM {PagerID} "" Sends a page to any numeric pager with the specified phone number and pager ID. There are many types of numeric paging services, and you must specify the type with the argument. The {PagerID} argument is only necessary with some of the s. The pager system type, one of NUM, NUM-A, or NUM-B: NUM Standard numeric pager- waits for the other side to answer and dials the message. {PagerID} should be omitted. NUM-A Skytel-style numeric pager- waits for the other side to answer, dials the {PagerID} and a pound sign (#), then dials the message and then two pound signs. Ex: 800-SKY-PAGE (800-759-7243) uses this. NUM-B PageUSA-style numeric pager- waits for the other side to answer, dials the {PagerID}, waits again, and dials the message and then a pound sign. Ex: 800-589-9770 uses this. The phone number to dial. This must be exactly 10 digits, without a leading 1 or 0. Area code 809 is restricted, as are some other numbers. {PagerID} Used with NUM-A and NUM-B only, this is the user's Pager ID number. "" The message to be paged. This MUST be in quotes. +REMIND "" Adds a reminder to your reminder schedule, for your locally configured timezone. The arguments are: The date. All characters must be there, e.g., 01/01/95 or 12/09/94. The time in 24-hour notation. All characters must be there, e.g., 0001 or 0945. One of: ONCE DAILY WEEKLY WEEKDAILY One of your configured pager names "" The message to be paged out. This MUST be enclosed in quotes and no quotes may be used in the message. FAXING: Since Outward Faxing usually involves some text in the body of the letter which is being faxed, or the inclusion of a postscript file, we decided that it didn't make too much sense to put commands in the body that may conflict with the text or create confusion as to where the commands end and where the text starts. Thus, in order to send an Outward Fax, commands to instruct Interpage to send the fax are placed in the "Subject:" field of the header message. To send a fax, use any mail program which allows you to have a Subject: field (almost all do) and send mail to: -config@interpage.net Then, in the subject, use the following commands: "fax " - Tells the E-Mail Server that you want to send a fax (note the space after the word fax - there MUST be a blank space after the word fax in order for the system to understand that you wish to dispatch a fax.) "-ps" - Tells the E-Mail Server that you will be including a postscripyt "-nocover"-Tells the E-Mail Server that you do NOT want a cover sheet sent <#> - Tells the E-Mail Server the desitnationfax number, must begin with "011" if outside the US/Canada/809. - Tells the E-Mail Server the name of the recipient to appear on the cover sheet. Thus, if Interpage user "joe" wishes to send a fax to 604-555-1212 to Don in Vancouver, B.C., joe would log on to his home (or alternate) account and send mail to: --> joe-config@interpage.net The Subject: of the message should read: --> Subject:fax 6045551212 Don in Vancouver, B.C. ...and then enter some text and/or a preparef file to be faxed, as one would normally do with e-mail. The cover sheet will display "To: Don in Vancouver, BC, Fax Phone: 604-555-1212". ______________________________________________________________________________ IV. How do I get paged and faxed? ********************************* *The Interpage Schedule: Overview --------------------------------- When Interpage gets mail from either your home account or from people who e-mail to @interpage.net, it "looks" at your "Paging/Fax/Forwarding Schedule" to see what it is supposed to do. For example: 1. We check to see if you have any options exercised for the inbound mail. By default, mail is forwarded to your home account, and is paged 24 hours a day to your pager. You can change these settings as many times as you want or arrange a significanlty more detailed schedule by Telnetting to our system or configuring via E-Mail. 2. If you have NO options exercised, ie, there is nothing in your page/fax/mail-forwarding schedule, we do nothing. Mail will just "die" here. This is why if you give out your Interpage address to people who wish to mail to you, even if you are not using paging at a given time you should have a mail-forwarding "schedule" active to *some* account in order to make sure that you do not "lose" any mail. If you have set mail to be forwarded to your home site and/or other locations, we will forward copies out to each of the specifed locations. If you don't have mail forwarding set (ie, you remove e-mail forwarding), you will NOT get copies of your mail, but you will still be paged if you have any paging options set. This is useful if you do not expect people to mail to your Interpage account, and simply want to use it as a means to generate pages/faxes when e-mail is forwarded to Interpage from your home account(s). If you have set your Interpage account to page/fax you at your pager(s) or fax machine(s), we will page each pager and/or fax to each fax machine in sequence until we go through all the pagers/faxes which you have set to be active at the time that e-mail for you arrives at our system. If you don't have any pagers/faxes set (ie, you remove all pager/fax notification), you will NOT get any pages nor receive any faxes, but you will continue to receive copies of e-mail PROVIDED that you do NOT remove e-mail forwarding as well. Thus, a simplified schedule of pages/fax/e-mail would be: # From To Type Flags Args ---- ---- ---- ----- ---- A. 0800 2359 Page Pager: alpha B. 0000 2359 Mail To 1 users. C. 1200 1300 Page Pager: alpha D. 1500 2399 Page Pager: alpha E. 0000 2399 Fax faxnow F. 0000 2399 Fax From 1 user (A more detailed schedule is included below, this was intentionally left simple as a means of illustration and introduction.) With this schedule in place, you will receive pages only between 8AM and midnight local time, but your mail would be forwarded to a@b.com at all times. If a message were to arrive with the 'word' "faxnow" in the subject, it will be faxed to a previously designated fax, and all mail from user x@y.z will be faxed as well, to another previously designated fax. To see where mail is faxed/forwarded to under items "B", "E", and "F" you would type "D" for "Detailed Listing" and then enter the item, in this case "B" or "E" or "F". The system will then give out information regarding the specifics of that schedule entry. Additionally, between Noon and 1PM local time, not only will all mail be paged to your Alpha pager (code named "Alpha1"), but any mail with the word "Important" in the Subject: line will also be sent to your numeric pager (code named "Numeric1") for notification. Finally, any mail that arrives between 3PM and Midnight will not only be forwarded to a@b.com, but also to x@y.edu. *The Interpage Schedle: Use and Configurations ---------------------------------------------- In order to set your schedule, you will need to telnet to Interpage or send us a detail at "help@interpage.net" of how you would like us to enter your schedule into our system. Currently, you may not access this Scheduler via e-mail configuration. A typical schedule with includes faxing, alpha paging, numeric paging, and e-mail forwarding, as well as some restrictions on when each one is to take place, appears below: ----------------------------------------------------- Paging/forwarding/faxing schedule for account anyname Pages will be held until Fri Feb 3 23:59:59 1995 #. From To Type Flags Args A. 00:00 00:05 Page Pager: numer1. B. 00:00 23:59 Page C Pager: numer2. Code: 6001. C. 00:00 23:59 Page C Pager: alpha1. Code: page-alpha. D. 00:00 23:59 Page C Pager: numer1. Code: page-numeric. E. 01:00 23:59 Page A C Pager: alpha1. Code: doug. 2 restr. F. 00:00 23:59 Dir. Word: telpage. Pager: numer1. G. 00:00 23:59 Page A Pager: alpha1. 1 restr. H. 00:00 23:59 Fax C To 3125551212, VP: 212-555-1212. Cover page. Code: Fax-Test. I. 00:00 23:59 Fax C To 8085551212, VP: 212-555-1212. Cover page. Code: Fax-Office. Menu: Return. Redisplay D. Detailed entry display +. Add schedule entry Q. Quit to main menu -. Remove schedule entry H. Page hold options E. Edit schedule entry K. Display key Return redraws. Option: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note that the schedule contains specific information for EACH schedule entry, mainly: -an entry letter -the time during which the schedule entry is active -the type of schedule entry it is. That is, if mail is received when the schedule is active and no other screens are present, will the mail be paged, faxed, forwarded or sent as a "direct page" (see below). -a list of flags, in any. You will note two columns of Flags: one on the left, and the other to the right. "Left" flags generally indicate any screens, or restrictions on the schedule entry, such as a restriction to allow the schedule to be active ONLY when mail from a specific user(s) comes in, otherwise it is to be ignored. Flags on the right side, usually a "C", desginate that some sort of success/failure confirmation is to be generated. This is why you see a "right" C near the fax schedules, as these by default generate a success or failure e-mail confirmation message. -an intemization of the restrictions, confirmations, or fax cover sheet iformation. Now let's say that you views your schedules, but don't really understand what all the keywords and letters mean. Well, you will note that there is an option "K - Display Key". This will list all the current "keys" and codes displayed on the Schedle Option Screen, as such: -------------------------------------------- Option: K Key: C. Send email confirmations: SO. to sender of email when paged/faxed okay SF. to sender of email when page/fax fails UO. to user when paged/faxed okay UF. to user when page/fax fails Flags: C. Restrict by codeword U. Restrict to certain authorized users A. Restrict to all users but certain restricted users VP. Voice phone number for fax cover page Return redraws. Option: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You may select option "K" at any time while in the main page to refresh yourself on what the flags and codewords means. Alternately, you may wish to examine a given schedule entry in more detail. To do this, enter "D" for Detailed Entry Display. The system will then ask you to tell it which schedule entry you wish to see, and you should select the letter which corresponds to the entry which you wish to examine in greater detail. Thus, as an example: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Display which schedule entry: G Done for everyone but these 1 restricted users: roundtable@cni.org Return redraws. Option: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This tells you that Schedule G, paging to an Alpha Pager 24 hours a day (from the main schedule screen) will NOT result in a page if mail is received from a either a person or a mailing list with the From: or the Sender: information of "rountable@cni.org". (In this case it is a mailing list, but it could be any person as well.) You may examine any schedule entry this way to obtain detailed information about restrictions or screens for that given entry. Now let's say that you want to add a new schedule entry. The process is the mainly the same for pagers, fax, e-mail forwarding, or direct paging. To create a new schedule, enter "+", as such (what the system sends you is denoted by a >) >Return redraws. Option: + >Enter starting time in 24 hour notation [HHMM]: 0000 >Enter ending time in 24 hour notation [HHMM]: 2359 [HINT: you may type 9999 and the system will set it as 2359] >P. Page >M. Mail forwarding >D. Direct page >F. Fax >Which kind of schedule entry: [The system here is asking you what sort of activity do you want to take place when e-mail arrives. To have the e-mail sent to your pager, enter "P", to have it sent to your fax, enter "F", to have it forwarded to another e-mail account, enter "M", and to have a "Direct Page" generated, where someone can send you a telephone number (only) by placing it as the subject of their letter, enter "D". In this case, we will assume you want to set up a pager schedule, and thus you enter "P"] P >Please select a pager: >A. alpha1 >B. numer1 >C. numer2 >Choice: [The system is asking you to tell it which one of the pagers which you have configured with us will be used. If you only have one pager, this section will be skipped.] A >Send email confirmation of successful page to sender? [If the page is successfully paged to you, do you want the sender to receive a letter saying so? As an example, we enter "Y" for yes] Y >Send email confirmation of successful page to you? [If the page is successfully paged to you, do YOU want to receive an e-mail message saying so? As an example, we enter "Y" for yes] Y >Send email confirmation of failed page to sender? [If the page fails to be paged to your system, should Interpage send mail to the sender telling him/her so? We use "Y" for yes as an example] Y >Send email confirmation of failed page to you? [If the page fails to be paged to your system, do YOU want e-mail sent to alert you? We use "Y" for yes as an example] Y >Do this only if selected codeword is in the subject? [You may screen pages/faxes/email forwarding by restricting a schedule to activate only when a special codeword is in the subject. If you select "Yes", Interpage will then ask you for the codeword. In our example, we chose not to use the codeword restriction, so we select "N" for no.] N >Would you like to restrict by user email address? [You may restrict a schedule by who the mail comes from. As noted above, Interpage looks to both the "From:" and the "Sender:" information in the header lines of a given piece of email, and weighs each eqaully. In our example, we will restrict a schedule by a user's e-mail address, and so we answer "Y" for yes] >R. Restrict to only certain users >A. Allow all users but certain users Choice: [The system here is asking how you want the schedule restricted. You may select "R" to create a list of ONLY certain users who will be able to trigger a schedule's activity. Thus, you can set a@cat.dog and b@zebra.elephant...etc. to trigger a schedule, but all OTHER mail will not trigger this specific schedule which we are creating. You may of course create other schedules for other mail, they will not interfere with the instant schedule. You may also opt to allow all mail except certain mail to trigger the schedule. This is useful in screening out mailing lists and other repetitive mailings which you do not wish to be paged/faxed/forwaded. In our example of a "Detail of Schedule" entry, we listed a screen for "rountable@cni.org", so we will continue with that here. As an example, we select "A" to allow all users but certain users (ie, the mailing list) to page us.] A >Enter users you want to be restricted. Return by itself ends list. > [Interpage will then prompt you with a > on a new line to enter the mailing address which you want restricted. You may enter as many as you like, but please hit RETURN/ after each entry to start a subsequent entry off on a new line. In our example, we will screen the "roundtable" mailing list] roundtable@cin.org > >Entry added [We added "rountable@cni.org", hit RETURN, and then on the blank line with the > which Interpage sent back , we hit another RETURN, to tell Interpage we are done adding addresses. Interpage let's us know the entry was added, and then allows you to continue with other functions in the Scheduling menu. Hit RETURN to see the new entry, as:] [...] > Fax-Test. >I. 00:00 23:59 Fax C To 8085551212, VP: 212-555-1212. Cover page. >.Code: > Fax-Office. >J. 00:00 23:59 Page A Pager: alpha1. 1 restr. [You will note that a new entry, "J" was created. To see what we just did, view detailed information about "J" by entering "D", and then "J"] >Display which schedule entry: J >Done for everyone but these 1 restricted users: >roundtable@cni.org >Return redraws. Option: [You may even make changes to your new schedule "J" by editing it with the "E" key. Enter "E", and then "J", and the system will itemize all the options you just went through to set up schedule J, and you may alter these at will be selecting the appropriate letter for the item that you wish to change.] >Edit which schedule entry: J >Editing schedule entry of type Page. >A. Remove restricted user >V. View addresses >Q. Quit to previous menu [Since "J" was only a test schedule, you may want to remove it. To do so, enter "-", and then "J" to tell the system that you want to remove schedule "J"] >Return redraws. Option: - >Remove which schedule entry: J >Are you sure you want to remove J? Yes >Removed. [When you redraw the main Scheduling screen (by hitting RETURN), you will note that schedule J has been removed.] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- You will note that on the top of our sample Schedule page, it said something odd: >Paging/forwarding/faxing schedule for account anyname > >Page holding is not currently enabled. #. From To Type Flags Args A. 00:00 00:05 Page Pager: numer1. B. 00:00 23:59 Page C Pager: numer2. Code: 6001 [...] Note that is says "Page holding is not currently enabled." You may wonder what this is telling you. In some instances, you may not need to be paged, even though you have your schedule set to do so. Typically, you may find yourself near a terminal, or stay at work later than you thought to read some e-mail, and thus you will know when e-mail arrives and do not need to be paged. You may use the "Page Hold" feature to suspend paging for a given period of time so that while you do have access to your mail you will not be paged. To set this, select option "H", "Page hold options". The system will respond with: >Page holding is not currently enabled. Enable it? Y >Hold pages for how long? (HHMM) [Enter a given number of hours and minutes during which time you do not wish to receive pages] 0215 >Page holding enabled. >Return redraws. Option: Hit RETURN, and you should see: >Pages will be held until Fri Feb 3 17:52:22 1995 >#. From To Type Flags Args >A. 00:00 00:05 Page Pager: numer1. >B. 00:00 23:59 Page C Pager: numer2. [...] Page holding will thus be enabled for two hours and fifteen minutes, that is, until 17:52:22. [HINT: You may also set this by sending an e-mail message to yourusername-config@interpage.net, Subject is ignored, and in the body put: "hold on" (no quotes) and page holding will be enabled untill midnight. To turn page holding off via e-mail, type "hold off". See the e-mail useredit instructions, Section III above, for more details.] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
